Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a six-month trial for a taxi-sharing service, aimed at offering affordable and convenient travel between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
This service connects Ibn Battuta Centre in Dubai to Al Wahda Centre in Abu Dhabi, allowing passengers to share rides, cutting travel costs by up to 75% for regular commuters, according to an RTA announcement.
The shared taxi service offers flexible fare options depending on the number of passengers:
1. With four passengers sharing the ride, each pays just AED 66, a fraction of the usual fare.
2. For smaller groups, the fare per passenger will be AED 132 for two passengers and AED 88 for three passengers. Travelers can pay using bank cards or nol cards, ensuring flexibility.
Adel Shakri, Director of Planning and Business Development at RTA's Public Transport Agency, explained the route selection: “Ibn Battuta Centre and Al Wahda Centre were chosen after careful analysis. Both are well-connected to public transit hubs and parking, making them ideal for this pilot.”
The service not only offers savings but also aims to reduce traffic congestion and lower environmental impact. By promoting ride-sharing, the RTA hopes to reduce carbon emissions and limit the use of unauthorized transport services.
Passenger safety is a top concern, with RTA taxis equipped with cameras connected to the Operations Control Centre and systems to monitor driver behavior, ensuring a safe and comfortable ride.
If successful, the RTA plans to expand taxi-sharing to other routes, providing more sustainable travel options within the UAE.
