PTA Set to Finalize 5G Consultancy for Pakistan’s Next-Gen Mobile Services
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is set to open financial bids for the 5G consultancy on October 3. According to sources, the rankings of the companies applying for this consultancy will be disclosed after the financial bids are reviewed. While the lowest bidder will be given preference, the final decision will take both financial and technical bids into account. This process will determine which company will assist in the introduction of 5G services in Pakistan.
Five companies have submitted their technical proposals for the consultancy: Aetha Consulting Limited, Detecon Consulting FZ-LLC, Frontier Economics Limited, KomKonsult (Private) Limited, and National Economic Research Associates Inc. PTA had earlier opened the technical bids as part of its initiative to enhance Next Generation Mobile Services (NGMS) in the country. The assessment of both technical and financial proposals will adhere to Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) regulations.
The chosen consultancy firm will be responsible for creating a detailed report on the 5G launch in Pakistan, which will be developed in collaboration with various stakeholders. This report will serve as a blueprint for the rollout of 5G services. The government has set a target to launch these services by April 2025, aiming to boost data speeds, connectivity, and economic growth across the country.
Earlier this year, PTA called for applications for 5G consultancy after receiving approval from the Ministry of Finance. The authority also released Terms of Reference (ToRs) for hiring an international consultant to oversee the 5G spectrum launch. A total of 11 firms expressed interest in the consultancy, and in August 2024, PTA shortlisted 10 of these companies.
One company, JHK Construction, was excluded from the list as it mistakenly applied despite being a construction firm. The remaining firms were evaluated based on their potential to assist the government in releasing the IMT Spectrum to enhance mobile broadband services in Pakistan.
