The Tragic Tale of Irrfan Khan: A Talent Lost Too Soon

This blog might make you emotional because it tells the story of an artist who was immensely popular but left this world too soon.

Irrfan Khan, whose full name was Sahabzade Irfan Ali Khan, was born on January 7, 1967, in the town of Tonk, Rajasthan. He was born into a traditional Muslim family where his father was a businessman. Irrfan received his early education in Rajasthan and later enrolled in the National School of Drama (NSD) in Delhi. Soon after graduating from NSD, he began his film career. His first film, *Salaam Bombay!* (1988), was unexpectedly nominated for an Oscar, even though his role in the film was minor. However, this small role was enough to introduce him to the world of cinema.

Afterward, Irrfan played numerous roles in films and television, but for a long time, he was only recognized as a regular actor and not as a big star or hero. It might seem surprising to some, but it took fourteen years for an actor as talented as Irrfan to truly establish his place in the industry. His first major recognition came with the film *Haasil* in 2003, where he played the unforgettable role of Bhiya Ji.

The director of this film, Tigmanshu Dhulia, had known Irrfan since their days at NSD and always wanted to work with him. Irrfan’s performance as Bhiya Ji astonished audiences and marked the true beginning of his career.

Recalling Irrfan, Tigmanshu Dhulia says, "A better actor than Irrfan has not been born in India, or at least not in our times."

Following *Haasil*, Irrfan went on to deliver remarkable performances in films such as *Maqbool* (2004), *Rog* (2005), *The Namesake* (2006), *Life in a... Metro* (2007), *Paan Singh Tomar* (2012), and *The Lunchbox* (2013). His acting was so outstanding that he became recognized not just in India, but also in Hollywood. In Hollywood, he made his mark in films like *Slumdog Millionaire* (2008), *The Amazing Spider-Man* (2012), *Life of Pi* (2012), *Jurassic World* (2015), and *Inferno* (2016).

Irrfan Khan’s personal life was also interesting. He was married to Sutapa Sikdar, who was also an NSD graduate. They had two sons, Babil and Ayaan. Irrfan was always close to his family and cherished the moments spent with them.

Some incidents from Irrfan’s life are truly heart-touching. For instance, on Kapil Sharma's show, it was revealed that in 1993, when *Jurassic Park* was released, Irrfan didn’t have the money to buy a ticket, and thus, he missed watching the film. But twenty years later, when the fourth part of the film, *Jurassic World*, was made, Irrfan played the role of the park’s owner.

The level of Irrfan’s acting talent can also be gauged by an incident during the shooting of the film *Kasoor*. Director Mahesh Bhatt told him, "Irrfan, do a little overacting." Irrfan replied, "Bhatt Sahab, I don’t understand," to which Bhatt responded, "What you're doing looks too natural. At least make the audience feel like you're acting."

This story of Irrfan’s life might make you emotional. At the beginning of 2018, Irrfan was diagnosed with a brain tumor and went to London for treatment. Despite two years of struggle, the doctors could not save him, and on April 29, 2020, this beloved artist of the subcontinent left the world, leaving millions of fans grieving. Even after his death, he was awarded the Filmfare Best Actor award that year for his performance in the film *Angrezi Medium* (2020).

Irrfan Khan’s journey from anonymity to fame and then to the afterlife happened so swiftly that the world was left in shock. Even today, watching his films makes it hard to believe that this incredible artist will never grace the screen again.
