Big YouTube Update: All Videos Now Count Views The Same Way

YouTube Is Changing How It Counts Views From August 24

YouTube just made a big change. Starting August 24, 2026, every video on the platform will count views the same way. It does not matter if it is a long video, a live stream, or a Short. The moment a video starts playing, it counts as a view. Right from frame one.

Before this, the rules were mixed up. Shorts had one rule. Long videos had another. Live streams had their own thing going on too. Now YouTube is putting everyone on the same page.

Why YouTube Made This Change

Creators were confused. They did not know why a Short would get views fast but a long video would take longer to show the same number, even with similar traffic. YouTube said creators wanted one clear way to check how many people actually saw their video.

So from August 24, if someone hits play and the video starts, that is a view. Simple as that.

Your Earnings Are Not Changing

Here is the part that matters most for creators. Your money is safe. This change is only about the public view count that shows under your video. It has nothing to do with how you get paid.

YouTube will still look at deeper numbers to decide your earnings and your Partner Program status. Things like how long people actually watched, not just whether they clicked play. YouTube calls these numbers "Engaged Views" and "Engaged Watch Hours."

So even if your public view count jumps up fast, your income still depends on real watch time. Nothing changes there.

A Few Terms Are Getting New Names

YouTube is also renaming some terms inside the Partner Program rules. Here is a quick look:

Old NameNew Name
Valid public Shorts viewsQualified Shorts views
Valid public watch hoursQualified watch hours

These are just labels. The way you qualify for the Partner Program stays the same. Only the names changed inside YouTube Analytics.

Where To Check Both Numbers

If you want to see both the public view count and the real engagement numbers, go to YouTube Analytics and switch to Advanced Mode. That is where you can compare how many people pressed play against how many actually stayed and watched.

What This Means For Creators And Brands

If you make videos, your public view number will likely go up faster after August 24. That looks good on paper. But do not get too excited just from that number alone. Watch time is still the number that pays the bills.

If you work with brands or run ads, be careful too. A high view count does not always mean people watched the whole thing. Always check the engaged watch hours before judging how well a video really did.

The Bottom Line

YouTube wants one clean number for public views across every format. That part is simple and helpful. But smart creators and brands will still dig deeper into the real engagement numbers, because that is where the truth of a video's performance really lives.
