From Coldplay to Shakira: A Peek into the Royals' Music Playlists
It’s easy to assume that members of the royal family spend their time exclusively listening to classical music like Mozart or Bach. However, you might be surprised to find out their musical tastes are much more relatable. Here’s a glimpse into the favorite artists and songs enjoyed by some of the most famous royals.
Royal Music Preferences
During a visit to Goole High School in East Yorkshire, Prince William shared his appreciation for bands like Coldplay and Linkin Park. His brother, Prince Harry, has a slightly different taste, favoring the tunes of British music producer Skream. Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, is a fan of Janelle Monáe, while Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, enjoys the timeless hits of ABBA. Unsurprisingly, The Beatles are also among the royals' favorites. Both Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have been knighted by the royal family, in 1997 and 2018 respectively.
While the royals enjoy their personal music favorites, their wedding performances told a different story. For their 2011 wedding, Prince William and Kate Middleton had Ellie Goulding perform, while Harry and Meghan Markle chose Elton John, a long-time friend of the royal family, to perform at their 2018 wedding.
The Royal Children’s Musical Picks
The younger generation of royals also has its own musical preferences. Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, the children of William and Kate, love dancing to Shakira’s "Waka Waka." According to their father, it’s a daily challenge to find a song that both George and Charlotte agree on. Prince William himself enjoys starting his day with "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC, a high-energy track he finds impossible not to dance to.
Meanwhile, Prince Harry fondly recalls how his mother, Princess Diana, loved "Simply the Best" by Tina Turner, describing it as a family favorite and a song she would belt out, creating cherished memories.
