When Hazrat Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki (RA) passed away, there was a great commotion. His funeral was prepared, and the body was brought to a large field for the prayer.
A massive crowd gathered to offer the funeral prayer. It seemed like an ocean of people, stretching as far as the eye could see, resembling a wild river. When it was time to lead the prayer, a man stepped forward and said, "I am his trustee. Hazrat (RA) had given me a will, and I wish to convey it to the people." The crowd fell silent.
The will was this: Hazrat Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki (RA) had willed that his funeral prayer should be led by a person who possesses four qualities.
1. The first quality is that he has never missed the Takbeer-e-Oola (the first Takbeer of the prayer) in his life.
2. The second condition is that he has never missed the Tahajjud (night prayer) in his life.
3. The third is that he has never looked at a non-mahram (someone not closely related) with bad intentions.
4. The fourth is that he is such a devout worshiper that he has never missed the Sunnah prayers of Asr.
Whoever possesses these four qualities should lead my funeral prayer.
When this was announced, the crowd fell silent, and people lowered their heads in reflection. Who could step forward with such qualities? A long time passed, until finally, a man came forward, weeping. He approached Hazrat Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki's (RA) body, uncovered the sheet, and said, "Qutbuddin, you have passed away, but you have disgraced me. You have revealed my secret."
He then swore in front of the crowd, with Allah as his witness, that he possessed all four qualities. The people saw that this man was none other than the ruler of the time, Shams-ud-Din Iltutmish.
At one time, even our rulers and kings were like this.
